Oranges are generally not considered keto-friendly because they contain a relatively high amount of net carbohydrates. A fresh orange weighing 100 grams contains about 9.1 to 12 grams of net carbs[1][2][5]. Since the standard ketogenic diet restricts net carbs to around 20 to 50 grams per day in order to maintain ketosis, eating just one medium orange (with approximately 12 grams of net carbs) could use up over half of your daily carb allowance[1][5][7]. This high carb content poses a significant challenge to staying in ketosis, the primary goal of a keto diet[1].
While oranges provide beneficial nutrients like vitamin C, their carbohydrate load makes them difficult to fit into a strict keto regimen[8][1]. If you do wish to include oranges, it should be in very small amounts and with careful attention to your overall daily carb intake[5][7]. Alternatively, there are several lower-carb fruits (such as strawberries, raspberries, and avocados) that are more suitable for keto diets[4][6].
