You can eat after getting a filling, but when and how depends on the type of filling material used and your dentist’s recommendations.[1] For most modern composite resin fillings, you can usually eat as soon as 2 hours after the procedure, as they harden almost instantly under a UV light.[1] However, it’s still best to avoid chewing directly on the filled tooth for up to 24 hours to preserve the filling.[1]
If you received a silver (amalgam) filling, you should wait at least 24 hours before chewing on that side of your mouth, since amalgam takes longer to fully set.[2] It’s recommended to eat soft foods during this time and continue being gentle with the filled tooth to minimize pressure and avoid damage.[5]
Regardless of the filling type, follow these general tips after your procedure:
- Wait until numbness from anesthetic wears off before eating to avoid biting your cheek or tongue.[2]
- Eat soft foods like scrambled eggs, yogurt, oatmeal, soup, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and soft pasta.[1][3]
- Chew carefully, preferably on the opposite side of the mouth from the filling.[6]
- Avoid foods that are hard (nuts, candy, chips), chewy (meats, gum, caramel), or sticky (toffee, dried fruit) for the first 24 hours—even longer for silver fillings.[3][5]
- Limit consumption of overly sugary foods and drinks to prevent bacteria growth around the new filling.[1]
- Refrain from very hot or cold beverages and foods for a few days to reduce sensitivity.[2][6]
Your dentist will provide specific recommendations based on your unique situation and filling type. If you experience pain, swelling, or any unusual symptoms, consult your dentist promptly.[2][6]
