Recent research suggests that eating too much chicken may be linked to health risks, including a higher risk of mortality and certain cancers. A 2025 cohort study from Italy found that individuals eating more than 300 grams of chicken per week (about 10.5 ounces) were 27% more likely to die from any cause compared to those who ate less than 100 grams per week[1][3][7]. Additionally, these higher consumers had a notably increased risk of gastrointestinal cancers[1][3].
However, experts caution against over-interpreting these findings: chicken is widely regarded as a quality protein and traditionally considered a healthier meat choice compared to red and processed meats. The majority of existing health guidelines, such as the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, recommend including poultry as part of a balanced diet and do not specify strict upper limits[7]. Importantly, this newer study may not account for all lifestyle factors and contradicts much prior research[2][7].
How chicken is prepared also matters. Fried or heavily processed chicken tends to have more unhealthy fats, calories, and possibly carcinogenic compounds, especially when cooked at high temperatures or with breading and oils. Regular consumption of fried chicken is associated with higher risks of heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes[4][5].
Contamination risks, such as food poisoning from bacteria and exposure to trace carcinogens formed at high-cooking temperatures, have also been documented with chicken products[5][8].
In summary, while chicken can be part of a healthy diet, consuming large amounts—especially more than 300 grams per week or frequently eating fried/processed versions—may pose health risks. Including a variety of protein sources and emphasizing preparation methods like baking or grilling can help mitigate potential dangers.
